an increase in the defense budget. but back then we had planes that couldn't fly for lack of spare parts or pilots. we had navy vessels that couldn't leave harbor because of lack of crew or, again, lack of spare parts. today we're well on our way to a 600-ship navy. we have 543 at present. we have -- our military, the morale is high. i think the people should understand that two-thirds of the defense budget pays for pay and salary, or pay and pension. and then you add to that food and wardrobe, and all the other things, and you only have a small portion going for weapons. but i am determined that if ever our men are called on, they should have the best that we can provide in the manner of tools and weapons. there has been reference to expensive spare parts, hammers costing $500. well, we are the ones who found those. i think we've given the american people back their spirit. i think there's an optimism in the land and a patriotism, and i think that we're in a position once again to heed the words of thomas paine, who said, "we have it in our power to begin the world over again.'' >> than

appears on the stage is very important. normally when a candidate gets defensive that is when they started looking bad. that happens with barack obama. it happened when he told hillary she was like have likable enough. it happened with mitt romney when he did the $10,000 bet with governor perry. it's very important that governor romney keeps making the case about the economy and keep pushing an alternative vision that the american people can see as a better path and a better way forward to improving the economic conditions. if he does that he will put the president on the defensive. if he allows the president to sort divide the audience, talk about women and myth of the war on women and talk about the middle-class and divide the country and gets on the defensive or talk about issues that are irrelevant to the economy, then that is place where governor rom can look at defensive and may not look as good to the audience. >> is it possible to be too prepared for the debate and candidate appears to be reading off a card imprinted in the back of his head because people are pounding him with info

of the defense sequester that somehow is protected it's not pro tented as you were pointed out last night. >> there is -- i sort of felt like because the romney campaign has been so absent on issues of natural security, substantive issues of national security beyond just name calling i feel like the campaign should be encouraged now that they have tried to talk about veterans issues. there are huge issues with the disability claims but also other elements of the v.a.'s performance in terms of this current generation of veterans and older generations of vets and romney in trying to go there, in virginia this week, showed he didn't even understand the issue he was trying to make political hay out of. the problem of suicides among veterans and says a solution is he won't cut military spending in the sequester. you know, i don't think he knows what the relationship of the v.a. funding is to the sequester. i'm not sure he knows that paul ryan voted for that sequester or that at this point wars are the way you make new veterans if he's threatening new wars in iran and syria the way he's been so
